MiCBT Applied Course

Mindfulness-integrated CBT Applied Course

Given that this is an applied course, during which you will be assisted in delivering the MiCBT programme to one or more persons, you will need a client base with which to practice. You need to have at least 2 clients with whom you can implement MiCBT from Week 2—we recommend a minimum of 2 clients in case one drops out, which would prevent you from continuing to actively participate in the course. Sometimes this takes a while to organise so we recommend that you are organised sufficiently in advance to be ready to start implementing the programme from Week 2, after our first online class.

Mindfulness-integrated Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (MiCBT) is an evidence-based transdiagnostic approach, specifically designed to address a wide range of mental health conditions. To implement MiCBT efficiently, it is essential that therapists also develop their own skills in mindfulness practice.

The aim of this comprehensive course is to provide participants with a sound understanding of principles, theory and practice of MiCBT, and to teach clinicians to implement MiCBT confidently with individual clients and groups across a range of diagnoses. During the course, participants will be able to offer this service to clients in most mental health settings, public and private, while being supervised by the trainer.

The course will involve didactic, practical and experiential means of learning, including:

  • A 2-day workshop to introduce theory and practical skills
  • Real case demonstrations on video and in a master class format (during the workshop)
  • Mindfulness meditation
  • Implementing the four stages of MiCBT, including mindfulness-based exposure and relapse prevention strategies to yourself and clients in 9 online classes over a 3-month period
  • Master classes and group supervision delivered online, involving role-play simulating current client attitudes and therapist responses, and general discussions on personal experience.

No prior knowledge of mindfulness is assumed. However, a working knowledge of CBT or REBT is required. Given that MiCBT is primarily designed to address clinical and subclinical conditions, only registered and currently practising psychologists, psychiatrists, general practitioners (mental health - level 2 in Australia), mental health social workers, mental health occupational therapists, mental health nurses and professionally qualified counsellors and psychotherapists may apply.

Learning Objectives

Participants will learn to use and implement the four stages of MiCBT with clients diagnosed with most mental health disorders and some health conditions, such as addiction and chronic pain. This will include learning the personal use and clinical implementation of:

  • Cognitive and behavioural methods to engage the client in the treatment plan efficiently
  • Basic and advanced mindfulness meditation methods
  • Mindfulness-based exposure techniques
  • Mindfulness-based conflict resolution
  • Compassion training through loving-kindness meditation and use of ethics
  • Enhancing neuroplasticity to help prevent relapse

The MiCBT Applied Course consists of 10 sessions spread over 12 weeks. Session 1 is a 2-day face-to-face workshop.  Sessions 2-10 are conducted online, using ClickMeeting.

This outstanding course exceeded my expectations of the results in my personal and professional life. The explanations of scientific basis of the practice and the way each practice builds emotional readiness for the next stage are just a few of many benefits of this training. I highly recommend this course.

MiCBT is a very powerful evidence based program that is useful across a variety of clinical conditions. The manner in which the course is instructed with the therapist going through the stages of program in the Applied Course while in supervision is what sets this program apart from other mindfulness interventions. After completing the course, the therapist has experienced the same interventions as the client. As a result there is a greater degree of personal and professional knowledge that the therapist can draw from. In addition, the CBT foundation that includes operant and respondent conditioning principles as well as cognitive principles sets it far above just the inclusion of cognitive principles. This course has provided the foundation to combine highly structured interventions associated with CBT and mindfulness in a manner that creates significant change in a short duration of time. I feel truly blessed as a clinician to have found this approach. It has created lasting change in my personal life, as well as my clients.
